2000 White Rock Cup Regatta

Corinthian Yacht Club, Dallas, TX
March 4, 2001

The White Rock Cup Charity Regatta was held in Dallas, TX on White Rock Lake at the Corinthian Boat Club on March 4, 2000. The weather forecast was high in the mid 60's winds north 5-10 mph morning turning light and variable midday. The weather was pretty much as the forecast called for. The afternoon winds were at times more than light gusting to probably about 10 mph. The skies were clear. It was a beautiful day.

The White Rock Cup is sailed to raise money for the Spina Bifida Association of Dallas. Representatives from the Spina Bifida Association were there to watch and help run the regatta. The twenty-four registrants donated a total of $431.00 to this very worthy cause. The participants also donated various food items for the lunch of hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, potato salad, cookies, and drinks. There is a beautiful perpetual trophy that the winner of the regatta gets to keep for the year and gets his name engraved on the trophy. Congratulations to Scott Mauney for an excellent day of sailing and getting to keep the trophy for the next year. The two-time defending champion, AJ Moritz, finished 3rd. Special thanks goes to all who registered and participated for their generous donations.

There were twenty-four boats registered in the regatta with twenty-two participating. The Oklahoma contingency could not make it due to health and a business meeting. The skill levels ranged from 1st regatta to experienced R/C sailors. There were two sailors from the Wichita, KS, area, two sailors from Houston, one sailor from San Antonio, and one sailor from Ore City, TX (East Texas). The rest were from the Dallas Metroplex including Lewisville.

Ten A and B heat races were sailed by 4:00 PM. Actually there was an extra B heat sailed due to a daysailor coming out from the dock area not paying attention to where he was going and ran over 3 or 4 Victorias and the windward mark. There was no damage to the Victorias but the 1st and 2nd place boat's skippers who were coming up to the finish line were quite disappointed when they heard the race was abandoned due to this incident. The 2nd start of this B heat ended with the 1st and 2nd place boats in the abandoned race finishing 2nd and 3rd thus being able to move into A heat.

Everyone had a great time. It was a just what the co-coordinators, Chris Cafiero, TRYC, and Charles Sudduth, LLYCA, expected it to be. We heard comments like "I can't wait until next year's White Rock Cup."
