1998 Region 2 RCCR - Victoria One Design

Chesapeake's Cadle Creek Yacht Club
July 18-19,1998
by Hal Slentz-Whalen

Location

This event was held at the Navy Radio Transmitter Facility Beach, ANASA Pier, Whitehall Creek, Chesapeake Bay. This site is a crescent shaped harbor on a creek that empties into the Bay near the Bay Bridge. It is well protected from chop and boat traffic wake and has a 100 foot wooden fixed pier that heads North which permitted setting up a Modified Olympic course on both the west side (18 Jul) and east side (19 Jul) of the pier. Tacking duels were intense and the second day was particularly stressful due to the lack of a B Fleet (A and B combined due to retiring skippers) to give the A Fleet a break between races.

Site Summary

This location gives smooth water with good breeze, but because of north pier heading is optimal for north or south breezes. Other winds forces a strained view of either windward or leeward mark.

Conditions

High Temp 95, Winds 1-5 knots (average 2, puffs to 10) from West/East, Waves 1-2 inch (no chop from wind or watercraft).

Overview

Hot sun and high temperatures caused several skippers to retire early from the series.

Traveler Award

Charles Sudduth drove from Texas in a Town & Country minivan with boat and 5 other family members! Considering the heat in Annapolis they didn't get a break by traveling north!! Charles dealt with the heat and carried his canteen (Quart water bottle) on a strap around his neck the entire time.

Special Thanks

Race Committee: Colin Wood, Tiffany Slentz-Whalen
Banquet: John Dunning (MAR), Excellent site (Naval Academy O'Club) and Superb food. I ate too much!

1998 Region 5 Championship

ByChristopher Cafiero

Former America's Cup sailor, Kelly Gough of Coppel, Texas won the 1998 Region #5 Victoria Championship, which was hosted by the Trinity River Yacht Club (TRYC) on White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas, during the weekend of June 6th and 7th. The Region #5 RCCR is the first sanctioned regatta to be held for the new Victoria One-Design class.

The TRYC hosted the event with the kind cooperation of the Corinthian Sailing Club (CSC), which allowed the use of their fine clubhouse, docks, and committee boats for the event.  Oliver Tse, regional representative for the EC-12's, and a new Victoria skipper, from Houston Model Yacht club graciously came up to Dallas to act as Regatta Director (RD) for the event. Oliver did a fine job coordinating 13 boats through some 32 heats for a total of 16 races, often in blustery conditions.  The regatta also featured the use of the recently adopted ISAF-RSD sailing rules, and the AMYA model Sailing Instructions, which include such nuances as a two-minute starting tape for each race.

While the regatta mostly featured local area skippers, David Goebel came into town from Altus, OK to sail his new Merit Cup inspired Victoria, Repose. David was probably the most improved skipper during the regatta, especially after two tuning sessions and the replacement of his stock sails with a Icarex polyester set made by Jack Hardesty.  Chris Cafiero upheld Class Secretary tradition by placing a solid last, with a series of blown rigging, dead batteries, and malfunctioning servos.

Kelly's Turbo Piglet dealt with the breezy conditions (winds ran from 8 to 14 mph) with a steady hand and impeccable judgement on the course. Turbo Piglet sailed with a Maritime Consultant's International (MCI) mast and a set of Carr Sails. Kelly's boat also features and interesting jib traveler of his own design for use in lighter airs. With 9 firsts in 16 races, Kelly was able to hold off second place finisher Scott Mauney, who racked up 6 first place finishes to close within 4 points of the lead at the end of the day. Like Kelly, Scott's boat flew Carr sails on a rig of his own design and construction. In third place with very consistent performance, was TRYC stalwart Jack Hardesty. With only one first, Jack put a steady performance in the "A" fleet with several seconds. Jack's boat has a number of interesting modifications of his own design, including an innovative jib attachment and his own sails.

The overall balance of the fleet was good, but several boats were hampered by electronics problems caused in part by water taking in the high winds early in the regatta. Nonetheless, TRYC Commodore Chuck LeMahieu put on a nice event that included a sumptuous Saturday night dinner at the clubhouse, and attractive glass trophies for the first five place finishers. Also, thanks again to the CSC for the use of their nice facilities.

Here's a series of photos of the 1998 Region 5 Victoria regionals, here's the 13 boat fleet with skippers, (Some hid out of camera range)
Here's seven boats lining up for the start
And they're Off!
Here's a shot of 5 boats just after the start! Sailing is meant for two or more boats!
Here's six of the boats rounding the mark!
These boats are so fast they nearly fly out of the water!
Now the boats may be fast, but sometimes the skippers may not be... Errr, which way do we go? (Note that each boat is on a different heading)
OK, the answer to that last question is "NOT under water!" This is Anastasia, Al Pritchard's #06 with his side stayless mast
Jack Hardesty's #77 Wet Kiss with his own sails.
Here's a shot of inside the boat house, Oliver Tse in tan hat on left, Kelly Gough in blue cap, Al Pritchard on right looking left, and Rob Davis in the red cap.
Here's a shot outside the boat house, early Saturday morning, Al Pritchard is in the foreground. Very nice facility on a very nice lake.

Notes:

Regatta included 14 races, comprised of 28 heats
One throw-out each day as indicated by *
DNF - Did Not Finish, Score = racers in event + 1 DNS - Did Not Start, Score = racers in event + 2 PR1,PR2 - Preliminary Races where each Heat was scored as a separate race to generate a rank for starting Heat Racing in R3

Race Sailing Instructions included the "passive race committee" concept, which gives racers 10-seconds to declare, or their penalty turn is doubled from a 360 degree turn to a 720 degree turn. This puts the responsibility on the racer to be quick in taking care of his mistakes. It worked well as only one 720 was called and there were no written protests. Plenty of 360's were turned and the racers were talking to each other.
