Skipper Ranking System

Have you ever wondered how you “rate” in relationship to your fellow skippers across the country or even across the world.

A system for ranking skippers who race at different locations at different times using the same class of boat was not readily available.  Therefore ideas were gathered from many handicapping systems an extensive development task was initiated and after an extensive amount of tweaking interspersed with reviews by Victoria Skippers “We now have a Skipper Ranking System”.

The goals of the Skipper Ranking System are:

·        A simple recording system
·        An easy to use and understand system
·
An annual system

These goals are achieved by using:

·        Results from major events only (Gold, Red and Green Chevron Events)
·        Results from regattas over the previous three year period
·        Averaging the best 4 scores of each competing skipper.

The Skipper Ranking System requires details of the event such as date it occurred, number of competitors entering the regatta and its chevron level is to be recorded.  The individual skippers positions are recorded (not the points) and their sail numbers is checked against the Victoria Registry database.  If the sail number is not valid the skipper is added to the database and tagged as not being registered, but used to compute results.

It is difficult to relate an event with 10 skippers sailing in Boston and 12 skippers sailing in  Miami to each other.  This cannot be done without some a system that awards the skippers at both events points in a standardized fashion, this is called normalization.

After trials with a normalized system the fleet in 2008 suggested we use a "Boats Beat" system.  So if 25 skippers enter an event first place is awarded 25 points, second is awarded 24 points and third is awarded 23 points. Continuing all the way to last place who gets only 1 point.

The need for a year modifier has been retained and extra points awarded as follows:

Last year gets an extra 20 points
2 years ago only gets 10 points
3 years ago does not get any extra points.

Event level modifier is also retained and points are awarded as follows:

Gold Chevron Events get an extra 20 points
Red Chevron Events get an extra 10 points
Green Chevron Events do not get any extra points

How is the Skipper Ranking System administered and how do I get ranked?

  • You must enter a ranking event to get entered into the ranking system.

  • Be a registered Victoria owner with a valid sail number.

  • Scores will be calculated during January of the new year.

  • Rankings will be valid for the remainder of that year.

  • Administration for the  Victoria fleet is being done by the class secretary.

  • A skipper with multiple boats registered, will be calculated as if it was one boat.

  • Event results must be sent to the Class Secretary.

What is a Ranking Event?

  • Any event Authorized by the Victoria Class Secretary.

  • National Championship   e.g. Gold Chevron event

  • Regional Championship  e.g.  Red Chevron event.

  • Annual Recurring Regatta - e.g.  Green Chevron event

  • Events that qualify as ranking events will be highlighted in the listed regattas.

  • Only ranking events with Date/NOR published 60 days prior are used in ranking.

  • Only ranking events having 6 or more skippers are used in ranking.

  • Events that are administered in accordance with national authority rules and regulations.

How does an event become a ranking event?

  • Authorized by the Victoria Class Secretary.

  • The event must run for two consecutive years before ranking status is given.

  • The event must be listed & highlighted on the VRC regatta page in January.
